Summary

Younger patients and those undergoing lumbar puncture during the day are more likely to experience post-dural puncture headache. Lower cerebrospinal fluid pressure is also a significant risk factor.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Anesthesiology
  • Neurosurgery

Background:

  • Post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) is a common complication following lumbar puncture.
  • Identifying patient-related risk factors is crucial for prevention and management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify patient-related risk factors for post-dural puncture headache (PDPH).
  • To analyze demographic and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) profiles associated with PDPH.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 413 patients undergoing diagnostic lumbar puncture was studied.
  • Patients were analyzed for demographic data, CSF profiles, and incidence of PDPH.
  • Multiple logistic regression was used to identify independent predictors of PDPH.

Main Results:

  • Younger age, lower body mass index, and fewer comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension) were associated with PDPH.
  • Lower white blood cell count, protein levels, and CSF pressure, along with a higher glucose ratio, were observed in PDPH patients.
  • Lumbar punctures performed during daytime were associated with a higher incidence of PDPH.

Conclusions:

  • Younger age and lower CSF pressure are confirmed risk factors for PDPH.
  • Daytime lumbar puncture emerged as a novel risk factor for developing PDPH.
