Rural Health Centers
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...

Analgesia and Pain Management

3.3K
Pain is critical to various clinical pathologies, provoking an urgent need for effective management. Pain, whether acute or chronic, is a complex neurochemical process. Its alleviation depends on the type, with nonopioid analgesics effective for mild to moderate pain, such as musculoskeletal or inflammatory pain, while neuropathic pain responds best to anticonvulsants, tricyclic antidepressants, or serotonin/norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. For severe acute or chronic pain, opioids may be...

Restorative Care01:19

Restorative Care

2.3K
Restorative care is provided once a patient has been discharged from a healthcare facility and requires additional services. The additional services include home care, rehabilitation programs, and extended care. Restorative care centers help the patient regain their previous level of functioning or acquire a new level of functioning due to the incapacitating effects of a disease or a disability. It aims to assist patients in enhancing their quality of life by encouraging independence,...

Specialized care settings or centers are situated in convenient locations within the community and offer care to a specific group or population. They consist of daycare facilities, mental health facilities, rural health facilities, educational institutions, industries, shelters for the homeless, and rehabilitation facilities.

Peripherally and Centrally Acting Muscle Relaxants: A Comparison01:09

Peripherally and Centrally Acting Muscle Relaxants: A Comparison

5.7K
Skeletal muscle relaxants can target the central nervous system [CNS] to reduce muscle tension or act directly at the neuromuscular junction to induce temporary paralysis. These two classes of muscle relaxants are called centrally acting muscle relaxants and peripherally acting muscle relaxants. They differ in their action, mechanism, administration route, and clinical uses.
Centrally acting muscle relaxants can be further divided into spasmolytic and antispasmodic drugs. Spasmolytic...

Area of Science:

  • Pain Management
  • Healthcare Services Research
  • Quality Improvement

Background:

  • Chronic pain patients often lack guaranteed proper diagnosis and treatment at specialized facilities.
  • There is a need to understand the organizational aspects and daily practices of pain treatment centers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the number of pain treatment facilities in the Netherlands.
  • To assess the content of organized specialized pain care.
  • To determine adherence to International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) guidelines.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire survey was developed based on IASP Recommendations for Pain Treatment Services.
  • The survey was distributed to the medical boards of 94 hospitals in the Netherlands.
  • A response rate of 86% was achieved.

Main Results:

  • 88.9% of hospitals reported providing organized specialized pain care.
  • This care was delivered by pain management teams (86.1%) or individual specialists (13.9%).
  • Data covered organizational structure, pain team composition, practice, patient characteristics, and research/education.

Conclusions:

  • Despite most hospitals reporting specialized pain care, few fully comply with IASP criteria.
  • The findings can inform the development of quality improvement standards for pain treatment facilities.
