An insertion-deletion polymorphism in interleukin-1α gene associated with susceptibility to preeclampsia

Objective:
To determine whether preeclampsia is associated with polymorphisms in the IL-1α.
Methods:
We genotyped a Chinese population (212 women with preeclampsia and 203 controls) for the polymorphism of the interleukin-1α gene (3'-untranslated region). Clinical data were collected from medical records.
Results:
Significantly reduced preeclampsia risk was found to be associated with both I allele (p < 0.001, OR = 0.487, CI = 0.360-0.658) and I/I genotype (p < 0.01, OR = 0.26, CI = 0.13-0.55) of the rs3783553 polymorphisms.
Conclusion:
The "TTCA" insertion allele of rs3783553 contributes to reduce the individual's susceptibility for preeclampsia, which implies that the insertion allele is a protective factor for the preeclampsia development.
