Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

16.7K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Tonsillitis I: Introduction

3.9K
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils, which are two lymphoid tissue masses at the back of the throat. This condition can cause discomfort and irritation in the throat.
Etiology
Three primary contributing factors have been identified.

Obesity01:24

Obesity

1.5K
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Drug Dosing: Obese Patients

365
In the United States, obesity is a prominent concern. It is linked to heightened mortality rates due to increased occurrences of conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and diabetes compared to nonobese individuals. A patient is classified as obese if their actual body weight surpasses the ideal or desirable body weight by 20%, based on Metropolitan Life Insurance Company data. Ideal body weights consider average weights and heights for males and females...

Pharmacokinetics in Obese Patients: Drug Absorption and Distribution

440
Obesity significantly alters the pharmacokinetic processes of drug absorption and distribution, presenting unique challenges in medical treatment. The increased fat tissue and decreased lean muscle in obese individuals can significantly affect how drugs are absorbed into the body and distributed across different tissues. This alteration can lead to variances in the effectiveness and safety of medications, necessitating adjustments in dosing or drug selection for obese patients. One notable...

Summary

Overweight or obesity does not increase the risk of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage in children and adults. This study found no significant correlation between body mass index and bleeding after tonsillectomy.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Pediatric Surgery
  • Obesity Research

Background:

  • Global rise in overweight and obesity prevalence.
  • Uncertainty regarding overweight's impact on post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between body mass index (BMI) and post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) risk.
  • To determine if overweight or obesity affects bleeding rates after tonsillectomy in pediatric and adult populations.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 300 patients undergoing tonsillectomy over one year.
  • Evaluation of body mass index (BMI) and post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage (PTH) episodes.
  • Categorization of bleeding episodes using the Austrian Tonsil Study criteria.

Main Results:

  • Post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage occurred in 55 patients (18.3%).
  • Hemorrhage rates were 11.1% in underweight, 18.9% in normal weight, and 18.7% in overweight patients (p=0.7).
  • Overweight or obesity showed no significant correlation with post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage risk, even after age stratification (p=0.8).

Conclusions:

  • Overweight or obesity does not elevate the risk of post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage.
  • Findings suggest BMI is not a significant predictive factor for bleeding complications after tonsillectomy.
