Gender differences in tumor and patient characteristics in those undergoing Mohs surgery

Gender differences in Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) reveal distinct characteristics for women. Women undergoing MMS for nonmelanoma skin cancer present with smaller basal cell carcinomas and fewer squamous cell carcinomas, often on legs and central face.

  • Women presented with smaller BCCs (0.9 cm vs. 1.2 cm) and a higher incidence of superficial BCCs.
  • Women had fewer squamous cell carcinomas and were more likely to have tumors on their legs and central face, while men had more tumors on scalps and ears. Plastic surgery referral was also higher in women.

Conclusions:

  • Significant gender-specific differences exist in patients undergoing MMS for nonmelanoma skin cancer.
  • These disparities may stem from variations in sun exposure, protective behaviors, and cosmetic considerations between genders.
