Background:

Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common psychological complication following ischemic stroke.
Affecting approximately one-third of stroke patients, PSD significantly worsens patient morbidity and mortality.
Effective recognition and treatment strategies for PSD are crucial for improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the underlying biological mechanisms of PSD.
To examine the similarities between PSD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD).
To explore diverse therapeutic approaches for managing PSD.

Main Methods:

Literature review of existing studies on post-stroke depression.
Analysis of biological underpinnings and shared features with MDD.
Compilation and evaluation of various pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options.

Main Results:

Evidence on the biological basis of PSD and its overlap with MDD is presented.
