Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accuracy of a handheld digital manometer (DM) against a U-tube (UT) manometer and an electronic transducer (ET) for Ppl measurement during thoracentesis.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty-three patients undergoing thoracentesis were enrolled.
  • Pleural pressure (Ppl) was measured using a handheld DM, UT manometer, and ET.
  • Measurements were taken at various stages, including after fluid aspiration.

Main Results:

  • A strong linear correlation was found between the DM and ET for elastance (r = 0.9582).
  • The correlation between the UT manometer and ET was poor (r = 0.0448).
  • DM and ET measurements showed low correlation in patients experiencing cough (R2 = 0.104).

Conclusions:

  • The handheld DM is a valid and user-friendly method for measuring Ppl during thoracentesis.
  • Further research is needed to explore its utility in predicting clinical outcomes.
