    Background:

    • Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) is increasingly vital for HIV/AIDS rehabilitation.
    • The Living Well Lab (LWL) at Friends For Life (FFL) in Vancouver offers free CAM therapies to people living with HIV/AIDS.
    • This study evaluated CAM use and its impact on health outcomes for FFL's HIV+ members.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the impact of CAM therapies on the health and quality of life of individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
    • To explore participants' experiences and satisfaction with CAM services.
    • To identify factors contributing to observed health changes.

    Main Methods:

    • A longitudinal, mixed-methods approach was employed over 18 months.
    • Participants (n=207) completed outcome packages at 5 time points and interviews at 3 time points.
    • Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data used content analysis and thematic coding.

    Main Results:

    • Quantitative data indicated improvements in mental and physical wellbeing, social support, and patient satisfaction.
    • Validated scales (SF-12, Arizona Integrative Outcomes Scale) and visual analog scales showed positive changes.
    • Participants attributed improvements to factors like anxiety management, illness acceptance, relaxation, self-care, and social support.

    Conclusions:

    • CAM use appears associated with positive changes in physical, social, and mental wellbeing for people living with HIV/AIDS.
    • The study identified valuable lessons for future research in this area.
    • Findings support the integration of CAM into rehabilitative care for HIV/AIDS patients.
