Stem Cell Culture01:17

Stem Cell Culture

4.5K
Stem cell research aims to find ways to use stem cells to regenerate and repair cellular damage. Over time, most adult cells undergo the wear and tear of aging and lose their ability to divide and repair themselves. Stem cells do not display a particular morphology or function. Adult stem cells, which exist as a small subset of cells in most tissues, keep dividing and can differentiate into a number of specialized cells generally formed by that tissue. These cells enable the body to renew and...

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration01:21

Stem Cell Therapy for Tissue Regeneration

3.8K
Stem cell therapy is a method used in regenerative medicine to repair and restore function to damaged tissues and organs. Stem cells have the potential to proliferate and differentiate into various tissue types, making them ideal candidates for tissue regeneration. For example, hematopoietic stem cell transplants are commonly used in blood cancer treatment to replenish damaged bone marrow and restore healthy blood cells.

iPS Cell Differentiation01:22

iPS Cell Differentiation

2.2K
The ability of induced pluripotent stem cells or iPSCs to differentiate into most body cell types has stimulated repair and regenerative medicine research over the past few decades. iPSC-derived blood cells, hepatocytes, beta islet cells, cardiomyocytes, neurons, and other cell types can repair injuries or regenerate damaged tissue in diseases such as diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders.

Tissue Renewal without Stem Cells01:23

Tissue Renewal without Stem Cells

1.6K
After cellular or tissue damage, the resident stem cells present in the human body can locally repair and regenerate the damaged tissue or organ. However, even though some tissues do not have stem cells, they can repair and regenerate with the help of pre-existing cells. For example, beta cells of the pancreas and hepatocytes of the liver can divide to renew and regenerate the tissue. Here, both cell division and cell death are well regulated by homeostasis.
However, failure of such a system...

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

4.8K
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce different cell types. Ordinarily, cells that have differentiated into a specific cell type are terminally differentiated; however, scientists have found a way to reprogram these mature cells so that they dedifferentiate and return to an unspecialized, proliferative state. These cells are pluripotent like embryonic stem cells—able to produce all cell types—and are called induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs).

Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells

22.9K
Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that divide and produce different types of cells. Ordinarily, cells that have differentiated into a specific cell type are post-mitotic—that is, they no longer divide. However, scientists have found a way to reprogram these mature cells so that they “de-differentiate” and return to an unspecialized, proliferative state. These cells are also pluripotent like embryonic stem cells—able to produce all cell types—and are therefore...

Summary

Human umbilical cord blood stem cells (hUCBSCs) showed positive effects on blood glucose control and erectile dysfunction in diabetic patients. While not a complete cure, hUCBsc treatment offers potential benefits for managing these conditions.

Area of Science:

  • Stem cell biology
  • Regenerative medicine
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Stem cells possess self-renewal, homing, and multipotent differentiation capabilities.
  • Diabetes mellitus can lead to complications such as erectile dysfunction.
  • Human umbilical cord blood stem cells (hUCBSCs) are being investigated for therapeutic potential.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of hUCBsc treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes and erectile dysfunction.
  • To assess the impact of hUCBscs on glycemic control and erectile function.

Main Methods:

  • Five male patients with type 2 diabetes and severe erectile dysfunction received bilateral intracavernous infusion of 1.5x10(7) hUCBSCs.
  • Patients were matched for ABO, HLA-AB, DR, and sex.
  • No immunosuppression was administered.
  • Follow-up included monitoring blood glucose, medication dosage, and erectile function for 9 months.

Main Results:

  • Blood glucose levels decreased within two weeks, and hypoglycemic agent doses were reduced for 6-7 months.
  • Glycosylated hemoglobin levels improved for 3-4 months post-treatment.
  • Libido improved, and morning erections were regained within three weeks.
  • Two patients maintained erections with medication, while one required a penile prosthesis, and two reverted to non-erectile states by 8-9 months.

Conclusions:

  • hUCBsc treatment demonstrated a positive effect on both blood glucose and erectile dysfunction in diabetic patients.
  • The observed effects suggest a potential therapeutic role for hUCBSCs, possibly mediated by unknown humoral factors and the cells themselves.
  • Further research is needed to optimize hUCBsc therapy for diabetic complications.
