New lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery cathodes using antimony-doped tin oxide (STO) and ruthenium (Ru) particles operate below 4.0 V. These STO-supported Ru cathodes achieve high capacity and stability for rechargeable Li-O2 batteries.
Area of Science:
- Electrochemistry
- Materials Science
- Energy Storage
Background:
- Rechargeable lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) batteries offer high theoretical energy density but face challenges with operating voltage and cycle life.
- Developing stable and efficient cathode materials is critical for advancing Li-O2 battery technology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop novel cathode materials for Li-O2 batteries that operate at lower voltages and exhibit enhanced cyclability.
- To investigate the performance of antimony-doped tin oxide (STO)-supported ruthenium (Ru) particles as cathode catalysts.
Main Methods:
- Synthesis of Sb-doped tin oxide (STO) supported Ru nanoparticles.
- Electrochemical testing of the novel cathode material in Li-O2 battery cells.
- Analysis of discharge-capacity, charge-voltage profiles, and cycling stability.
Main Results:
- The novel STO-supported Ru cathodes enable Li-O2 batteries to operate below 4.0 V.
- A high specific capacity of 750 mA h g(-1) was achieved.
- The battery maintained this capacity over 50 discharge-charge cycles at 0.1 mA cm(-2).
Conclusions:
- Sb-doped tin oxide (STO)-supported Ru particles are promising cathode materials for stable and efficient rechargeable Li-O2 batteries.
- Operating below 4.0 V is a significant step towards practical Li-O2 battery applications.
- The demonstrated capacity and cycle life highlight the potential of this material system.
