Summary

The new CF Quantum® (CFQT) sweat test offers a faster, quantitative method for diagnosing cystic fibrosis (CF) with high accuracy. While effective, further refinement is needed to reduce invalid test results at higher sweat chloride levels.

Background:

  • Conventional sweat testing for cystic fibrosis (CF) is laborious and prone to errors.
  • A novel quantitative sweat test, the CF Quantum® (CFQT), has been developed to address these limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy and analytic validity of the CFQT sweat test.
  • To compare the CFQT with conventional sweat testing methods.

Main Methods:

  • Bilateral testing using both conventional methods and CFQT on the same day for CF patients and those with clinical indications.
  • Correlation graphs, Bland-Altman plots, sensitivity, specificity, and coefficient of variation analyses were performed.
  • Patient/parent preference for the CFQT versus conventional testing was assessed post-study.

Main Results:

  • The CFQT demonstrated a high correlation (0.98) with conventional sweat testing.
  • Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for CF were 100% and 96%, respectively.
  • The CFQT had a higher invalid test rate (16.5%) compared to conventional testing (3.8%), particularly at higher sweat chloride values. 88% of participants preferred the CFQT.

Conclusions:

  • The CFQT provides a rapid and straightforward quantitative sweat chloride measurement.
  • Further technological improvements are necessary to enhance analytic accuracy for elevated sweat chloride levels and minimize invalid test results.
