Danish general practitioners (GPs) voluntarily engage in continuous professional development (CPD) driven by professional needs and burnout prevention. Findings suggest the current voluntary CPD system is effective, negating the need for mandatory changes.

Background:

Continuous professional development (CPD) for Danish general practitioners (GPs) is voluntary and funded.
A debate exists regarding the introduction of mandatory CPD elements.
This study investigates current CPD usage and motivations among GPs.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify current CPD utilization patterns among Danish GPs.
To explore the underlying motivations influencing GPs' CPD activity choices.
To inform the ongoing discussion about mandatory CPD requirements.

Main Methods:

A mixed-methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative data.
Two focus group interviews were conducted in 2012.

An online questionnaire was distributed to 1079 randomly selected Danish GPs.

Main Results:

GPs choose CPD based on personal needs, professional updates, peer engagement, and burnout prevention.
Activities must be perceived as meaningful and relevant to impact practice.
GPs spend an average of 10.5 days annually on voluntary CPD; workplace-related and small group learning are significant.

Conclusions:

Danish GPs actively participate in voluntary accredited CPD.
Motivations for CPD include enhancing professional capacity and preventing burnout.
The current voluntary system appears sufficient, indicating no necessity for mandatory CPD.
