Summary

T-2 toxin, a harmful mycotoxin, was detected in poultry and cattle feedstuff in Northern Iran. Routine monitoring of animal feed is crucial to prevent diseases caused by contaminated feed.

Background:

  • T-2 toxin is a mycotoxin produced by Fusarium fungi.
  • Consumption of contaminated food and feed causes diseases in humans and animals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze T-2 toxin contamination in poultry and cattle feedstuff.
  • Study conducted in Babol, Sari, and Chalus cities, Mazandaran province, Northern Iran.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed 90 feedstuff samples.
  • Utilized the Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) method for T-2 toxin detection.

Main Results:

  • 11.7% of concentrate and bagasse samples showed T-2 toxin contamination (> 25 µg/kg).
  • 3.3% of concentrate and bagasse samples showed T-2 toxin contamination (> 50 µg/kg).
  • 10% of mixed poultry diets were contaminated with T-2 toxin (> 25 µg/kg).

Conclusions:

  • Poultry and cattle feedstuff in Mazandaran province are susceptible to T-2 toxin contamination.
  • Contaminated feed can lead to animal diseases and potential mycotoxin transfer to edible products.
  • Routine mycotoxin monitoring in animal feed is essential for effective management and prevention of adverse effects.
