  • Serrated polyps are precursors to a significant portion of sporadic colorectal cancers (CRC).
  • Endoscopic removal of adenomas, including serrated polyps, is the primary method for CRC prevention.
  • The Screening Program for Early Colorectal Cancer Detection (SPED) aims to identify and remove precancerous lesions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the characteristics of serrated polyps detected during screening colonoscopies.
  • To evaluate the prevalence of serrated polyps within the SPED program.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of 1,442 screening colonoscopies performed between 2000 and 2009.
  • Identification and characterization of serrated polyps.

  • Serrated polyps were detected in 11.9% of all patients and 45.8% of patients with polyps removed.
