    Summary

Focal choroidal excavations (FCE), identified via optical coherence tomography (OCT), can present with a vitelliform lesion. This case describes a larger vitelliform lesion within an FCE, potentially indicating a new subtype.

    Area of Science:

    • Ophthalmology
    • Medical Imaging
    • Retinal Diseases

    Background:

    • Focal choroidal excavations (FCE) are defined by choroidal depressions near the fovea, visualized by optical coherence tomography (OCT).
    • Previous reports have documented FCE associated with small vitelliform lesions.

    Observation:

    • This study details a unique case of FCE featuring a significant vitelliform lesion within the excavation.
    • The observed vitelliform lesion is larger than any previously reported in association with FCE.

    Findings:

    • The presence of a substantial vitelliform deposit within the FCE suggests a potential link between vitelliform material accumulation and FCE development.
    • This association may represent a novel variant, termed vitelliform focal choroidal excavation.

    Implications:

    • This finding expands the known spectrum of FCE presentations.
    • Recognizing this potential subtype could refine diagnostic criteria and inform future research into the pathogenesis of FCE and vitelliform lesions.
