We studied C60-containing self-assembled monolayers for organic field-effect transistors. Their conductance depends closely on structural and electronic properties, including charge transport pathways and fluctuations.
Area of Science:
- Materials Science
- Condensed Matter Physics
- Organic Electronics
Background:
- Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are crucial in organic electronics.
- C60-fullerenes are utilized in SAMs for their unique electronic properties.
- Understanding charge transport in these systems is key for device performance.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the conductance properties of C60-containing SAMs.
- To establish the relationship between transport characteristics and molecular properties.
- To analyze charge transport pathways and the impact of structural dynamics.
Main Methods:
- Molecular-dynamics simulations.
- Semiempirical electronic structure calculations.
- Landauer transport theory.
Main Results:
- A strong correlation was found between conductance and the structural/electronic properties of the SAMs.
- Local charge transport pathways within the SAMs were identified.
- The influence of structural fluctuations on conductance was quantified.
Conclusions:
- The conductance of C60-SAMs is intrinsically linked to their molecular structure and electronic states.
- Structural dynamics play a significant role in modulating charge transport.
- This work provides insights for designing improved organic electronic devices.

Drift Current:
The drift of charge carriers is started by an external electric field (E). Charged particles, such as electrons and holes, experience an acceleration between collisions with lattice atoms. For electrons, this results in a drift velocity (vd) given by:
