Encephalitis l: Introduction01:19

Encephalitis l: Introduction

11
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain parenchyma, most often due to infections or autoimmune processes. It presents with neuropsychiatric features such as fever, altered mental status, behavioral changes, cognitive dysfunction, seizures, focal deficits, and sometimes autonomic instability. In some cases, the meninges are also involved, resulting in meningoencephalitis.Infectious CausesInfectious encephalitis is most commonly viral but can also result from bacterial, fungal, or parasitic...

Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

6.1K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

Electroconvulsive Therapy01:30

Electroconvulsive Therapy

2.6K
Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), or shock therapy, remains a critical biomedical intervention for severe, treatment-resistant depression. While its origins can be traced back to Hippocrates' observations that malaria-induced convulsions alleviated mental illness, modern ECT has evolved significantly from its earlier, more primitive applications. First introduced in 1938 by Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues, ECT involves inducing controlled seizures using electrical currents. In its early...

Hemorrhagic Stroke l: Introduction01:17

Hemorrhagic Stroke l: Introduction

20
A hemorrhagic stroke is an acute neurological event that occurs when a weakened cerebral blood vessel ruptures, allowing blood to accumulate within or around the brain. The sudden release of blood forms a focal hematoma that increases intracranial pressure, displaces neural tissue, and can obstruct cerebrospinal fluid pathways. These effects may be compounded by intraventricular extension of the hemorrhage, cerebral edema, or compression of adjacent structures, all of which contribute to...

Increased Intracranial Pressure l: Introduction01:14

Increased Intracranial Pressure l: Introduction

23
Intracranial hypertension is a sustained elevation of intracranial pressure (ICP) above 22 mm Hg. In supine adults, normal ICP is ~7–15 mm Hg.The rigid, nonexpandable cranium contains three components—brain tissue, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)—that total ~1,700 mL in a typical adult: 1,400 mL brain (~80%), 150 mL blood (~10%), and 150 mL CSF (~10%). According to the Monro–Kellie doctrine, total intracranial volume is effectively fixed. When one component...

Encephalitis ll: Pathophysiology

20
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain parenchyma caused by direct viral invasion or immune-mediated mechanisms triggered by infections or tumors. Both processes lead to neuronal injury, disrupted neurotransmission, and diverse neurological symptoms, often with overlapping clinical and pathological features.Autoimmune EncephalitisIn autoimmune encephalitis, antibodies target neuronal antigens on cell surfaces, synapses, or within neurons. A key example is anti-NMDAR encephalitis, which can...

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Traditional headache surveys suffer from recall bias.
  • This study focused on
  • headache yesterday
  • to mitigate recall bias.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the prevalence and impact of headache on the preceding day across European populations.
  • To provide a more accurate measure of headache burden by minimizing recall bias.

Main Methods:

  • Adults aged 18-65 were surveyed across nine European countries.
  • Participation bias was assessed through non-responder studies.
  • Data collected on headache presence, duration, severity, and impact on work and social activities.

Main Results:

  • 15-17% of participants experienced headache yesterday, lasting an average of 6 hours.
  • Headache was severe in 56% of cases, causing work/school absence in 6% and reduced productivity in 20% of those working.
  • Social activities were impacted in 24% of cases; women reported higher prevalence (21%) than men (12%).

Conclusions:

  • Headache represents a significant burden, costing at least 0.7% of working capacity in Europe.
  • While work absence may be compensated, leisure and social activities are substantially affected by headache.
