Regulation of Food Intake01:30

Regulation of Food Intake

2.8K
Short-term regulation of food intake primarily involves neural signals from the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, blood nutrient levels, and GI tract hormones. Communication between the gut and brain via vagal nerve fibers plays a significant role in evaluating the contents of the gut. Clinical studies have shown that protein ingestion produces a more prolonged response in these nerve fibers compared to an equivalent amount of glucose. Additionally, the activation of stretch receptors caused by GI...

Metabolic States of the Body: Fasting and Starvation

2.8K
During the initial hours of fasting, the body uses up its glycogen stores as an energy source. Once these glycogen reserves are depleted, the body begins breaking down stored triglycerides and structural proteins. During this stage, glycerol becomes a key substrate for gluconeogenesis, while free fatty acids undergo beta-oxidation to provide energy for tissues, such as skeletal muscle. In the fasting state, the body spares protein breakdown as much as possible to conserve muscle and structural...

Hormonal Regulation01:33

Hormonal Regulation

30.3K
The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.

Hormonal Regulation01:40

Hormonal Regulation

37.5K
Hormones regulate a significant portion of digestion through activation of the neuroendocrine system. The neuroendocrine system of digestion contains many different hormones all with multiple functions that are both, directly and indirectly, involved in digestion.

Metabolic States of the Body: The Postabsorptive State01:18

Metabolic States of the Body: The Postabsorptive State

1.6K
The postabsorptive state usually starts about four hours after a meal and lasts until the next meal is eaten. During this time, the digestive system stops absorbing nutrients, and the body uses stored energy reserves to maintain stable blood glucose levels.
Initially, glycogen stored in the liver is broken down to release glucose into the bloodstream, while glycogen in the muscles is broken down to supply glucose for energy directly within the muscle cells. As glycogen stores diminish,...

Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure01:17

Hormonal Regulation of Blood Pressure

7.7K
Endocrinal or hormonal intervention in the cardiovascular system is predominantly exerted by the catecholamines - epinephrine and norepinephrine, as well as a slew of hormones that interact with renal function to modulate blood volume.
Epinephrine and Norepinephrine
The adrenal medulla releases epinephrine and norepinephrine, catecholamines that enhance and extend the sympathetic or "fight or flight" physiological response. These hormones escalate heart rate and the force of contraction...

Summary

Daily moderate exercise during hypoxia exposure did not change appetite hormones but improved lipid profiles. This combination exercise and hypoxia study found significant fat mass reduction and better cholesterol levels in males.

Area of Science:

  • Exercise Physiology
  • Altitude Medicine
  • Metabolic Health

Background:

  • Hypoxia exposure and exercise training can influence appetite and metabolism.
  • Investigating combined effects on hormonal appetite regulation and metabolic health is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if daily moderate exercise during 10-day normobaric hypoxia exposure alters appetite hormones.
  • To assess if this combined intervention augments metabolic health markers.

Main Methods:

  • 14 healthy males underwent 10-day hypoxic confinement (simulated 4000m).
  • Participants were divided into an exercise group (daily moderate intensity) and a sedentary group.
  • Meal tolerance tests measured appetite hormones, metabolic markers, and 13CO2 breath analysis pre- and post-confinement.

Main Results:

  • Body mass decreased in both groups; only the exercise group showed reduced whole-body fat mass.
  • Post-confinement, the exercise group had reduced postprandial plasma glucose and fasting total/LDL cholesterol.
  • No significant changes were observed in appetite hormones (ghrelin, PYY, GLP-1, leptin, adiponectin) or perceived appetite.

Conclusions:

  • Moderate exercise during hypoxia does not alter hormonal appetite regulation.
  • This combined intervention improves lipid profiles and reduces fat mass in healthy young males.
  • Exercise appears to be a key factor in mitigating negative metabolic effects of hypoxia.
