  • Data collected from 1982 to 1987 in Provincia de Vizcaya, Spain.
  • Examination of diagnosed medical conditions and HIV status.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • An increasing trend of hospitalized heroin addicts was observed annually.
  • Infectious diseases were the predominant pathologies.
  • Over 90% of individuals with non-opportunistic infections were HIV-positive.
  • A significant annual increase in tuberculosis and Candida infections was noted.

Conclusions:

  • HIV infection is highly prevalent in hospitalized heroin addicts.
  • HIV may increase susceptibility to common non-opportunistic infections.
  • Public health strategies are needed to address infectious diseases in this demographic.
