    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate postprocedure cognitive function across three standard sedation regimens for endoscopic procedures.
    • To identify complications necessitating provider interventions during sedation.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized trial involving 96 subjects undergoing colonoscopies.
    • Cognitive function assessed using Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status (TICS).
    • Comparison of propofol alone, propofol plus fentanyl, and midazolam plus fentanyl sedation groups.

    • The propofol-alone group showed no significant change in TICS scores at 24 and 48 hours (P = .924).

    • Significantly more jaw lift interventions were required in groups that received fentanyl.

    Conclusions:

    • Propofol-alone sedation has the least impact on postprocedure cognitive function.
    • Sedation regimens incorporating fentanyl are associated with a higher incidence of complications requiring intervention.
    • Propofol alone appears to be the preferred regimen for preserving cognitive function post-endoscopy.
