Summary

This systematic review found that education was the most common knowledge translation (KT) strategy in rehabilitation, but methodological quality was low. More rigorous studies are needed to improve evidence-based practice in rehabilitation professions.

  • Knowledge translation (KT) strategies influencing rehabilitation practice behaviors are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the state of science for KT strategies in rehabilitation professions.
  • To identify methodologies used in KT strategy research.
  • To report the description of KT interventions.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic review of 2,793 articles from 8 databases (1985-2013).
  • Inclusion criteria focused on research translation and uptake into clinical practice.
  • Data extraction and quality assessment by two independent reviewers, comparing interventions with WIDER recommendations.

Main Results:

  • 26 studies were included; 18 used multicomponent KT strategies.
  • Education was the predominant KT intervention, single or multicomponent.
  • Few studies utilized reminders or audit/feedback; only one economic evaluation.

Conclusions:

  • Heterogeneity of studies limited data pooling.
  • Modest-to-low methodological quality indicates gaps in rehabilitation KT.
  • Need for rigorously designed and well-reported studies in KT for rehabilitation.
