This study reveals how the lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) in primates cooperate to regulate decision-making. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex integrates outcome information to modulate decision functions in the lateral prefrontal cortex.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Cognitive Science
- Primate Behavior
Background:
- Primate decision-making flexibility is theoretically explained by reinforcement learning and frontal cortical mechanisms, but biological underpinnings are unclear.
- Meta-learning principles, like adjusting inverse temperature, are proposed to regulate behavioral control and exploration-exploitation trade-offs.
Purpose of the Study:
- Investigate the complementary roles of the lateral prefrontal cortex (LPFC) and dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) in regulating decision-making during exploration and exploitation.
- Elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying decision regulation in prefrontal cortical subregions.
Main Methods:
- Model-based analysis of unit activity recorded from LPFC and dACC in monkeys during decision-making tasks.
- Examined neural activity patterns in relation to behavioral control levels and outcome uncertainty.
Main Results:
- LPFC neural activity covaried with estimated behavioral control levels, reflecting decision function adaptation.
- dACC prominently encoded outcome uncertainty, crucial for task monitoring and control regulation.
- LPFC showed higher information integration before feedback, while dACC integrated more information after feedback.
Conclusions:
- Data support a model where dACC integrates reinforcement-based information to regulate LPFC's decision functions.
- Provides biological evidence for the cooperative roles of LPFC and dACC in primate decision regulation.
