Hormonal Regulation01:33

Hormonal Regulation

30.3K
The renin-aldosterone system is an endocrine system which guides the renal absorption of water and electrolytes, thus managing blood pressure and osmoregulation. Activation of the system begins in the kidneys with a small cluster of cells adjacent to the afferent and efferent blood vessels of the renal corpuscle. As the nephrons are filtering blood, juxtaglomerular cells monitor blood pressure. If they detect a decrease in pressure, they release the hormone renin into the bloodstream.

Development of Immunocompetence01:22

Development of Immunocompetence

1.2K
The initiation of cell-mediated immunity can be observed as early as the third month of fetal growth, with active antibody-mediated immunity following approximately one month later.
The initial cells that migrate from the fetal thymus settle within the skin and epithelial tissues lining the mouth, digestive tract, and in females, the uterus and vagina. These cells, including skin-based dendritic cells, serve as antigen-presenting cells, playing a key role in T cell activation.
Subsequent T...

Introduction to Innate and Adaptive Immunity

10.9K
The human immune system is a complex defense mechanism that protects the body from harmful pathogens and foreign substances. It comprises two crucial components: innate and adaptive immunity.
Innate immunity is the body's natural, nonspecific defense system that acts quickly to protect against pathogens. It incorporates physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes and cellular elements such as phagocytes and natural killer cells. This part of our immune system provides an immediate,...

Transcytosis of IgG01:15

Transcytosis of IgG

3.4K
Transcytosis is the process in which molecules are internalized by endocytosis, transported across the cell, and released through exocytosis from the opposite end of the cell. Molecules such as insulin, immunoglobulins, and certain nutrients are transferred through the recycling endosomes by recycling and transcytosis.
IgG molecules from a mother undergo transcytosis starting around 13 weeks of gestation. The amount of IgG transferred and entering the fetal blood circulation increases with...

Psychoneuroimmunology: Cardiovascular Disease

757
Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) is a multidisciplinary field that examines how psychological factors, particularly stress, interact with the immune system and impact physical health. Research in PNI has shown that chronic or traumatic stress can disrupt both the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. These disruptions contribute to serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases.
A key area of focus in PNI is the relationship between stress and coronary...

Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Reproductive Biology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Background:

  • Normal pregnancy establishes a Th2-dominant immunological state promoting feto-maternal tolerance.
  • The traditional Th1/Th2 imbalance model is insufficient for explaining pregnancy's complex immune dynamics.
  • Expanded paradigms include T-helper 17 (Th17) cells, regulatory T-cells, and dendritic cells in pregnancy immunology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the role of the innate immune system in maintaining a healthy pregnancy environment.
  • To explore immune system alterations associated with preeclampsia development.
  • To discuss the potential contribution of mesenchymal stem cells to feto-maternal tolerance.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of immunological studies in normal and preeclamptic pregnancies.
  • Analysis of current research on T-cell subsets (Th1, Th2, Th17, Treg) and dendritic cells.
  • Examination of evidence regarding mesenchymal stem cells in pregnancy.

Main Results:

  • The immune environment of normal pregnancy is complex, involving multiple T-cell subsets and antigen-presenting cells.
  • Preeclampsia is associated with dysregulation within this expanded immune network.
  • Mesenchymal stem cells are emerging as potential key players in immune tolerance during pregnancy.

Conclusions:

  • The innate immune system plays a critical role in establishing and maintaining a pregnancy-supporting environment.
  • Alterations in immune cell function and balance are implicated in preeclampsia pathogenesis.
  • Further research into the innate immune system's role is crucial for understanding and potentially treating preeclampsia.
