Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the personal qualities of new Bachelor of Nursing students.
  • To investigate if these qualities differ by age and gender.
  • To determine if personal qualities change during the nursing program.

  • The Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA) tool was utilized.
  • 138 nursing students completed the PQA upon enrollment.
  • The PQA was readministered to a subset of students after three years.

  • 24% of students displayed extreme scores (±2 SD) in at least one personal quality.
  • Age correlated positively with self-control, resilience, narcissism, empathy, and moral orientation.
  • Gender differences emerged: females were more conscientious and community-oriented; males showed higher narcissism and aloofness, and lower empathy.
  • Personal qualities remained stable over three years for students with follow-up data.

Conclusions:

  • Most nursing students have average personal qualities, but a significant minority exhibit extreme traits.
  • Older students demonstrate higher self-control, resilience, empathy, and narcissism, with a more communitarian outlook.
  • Significant gender-based variations in personal qualities were observed.
  • The stability of personal qualities suggests their importance in nursing student selection and recruitment.
