Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatology
  • Surgical Endoscopy

Background:

  • Acute suppurative cholangitis is a serious biliary tract infection.
  • Common bile duct stones are a frequent cause of cholangitis.
  • High surgical risk patients may not tolerate traditional surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of early endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and sphincterotomy in managing acute suppurative cholangitis.
  • To assess the outcomes of stone extraction and clinical improvement following the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen patients with acute suppurative cholangitis underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiography and sphincterotomy.
  • Common bile duct stones were the etiology in all cases.
  • Stone extraction was attempted during the procedure or with repeat interventions.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Endoscopic sphincterotomy was successful in 93.3% of patients.
  • Common bile duct clearance was achieved in 80% of patients.
  • Dramatic clinical improvement was observed in 73.3% of patients, with no recurrence during follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Early duodenoscopic sphincterotomy is a rewarding treatment for acute suppurative cholangitis.
  • The procedure facilitates stone removal and leads to rapid clinical recovery.
  • It offers a valuable alternative for high-risk surgical candidates.
