Summary

Combining a desensitizing agent (DA) with Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd: YAG) laser irradiation effectively minimizes methyl methacrylate monomer diffusion through dentin. This approach significantly reduces monomer leakage into the pulpal chamber during provisional crown fabrication.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Engineering
  • Restorative Dentistry

Background:

  • Acrylic and bisacryl resins are standard materials for provisional restorations.
  • External agents can affect dentin sensitivity by impacting dentinal tubules.
  • Obliterating dentinal tubules is a strategy to mitigate dentin sensitivity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To quantify methyl methacrylate monomer diffusion through dentin.
  • To assess the impact of desensitizing procedures on monomer diffusion.
  • To evaluate two provisional crown materials for monomer leakage.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized 40 human premolar teeth for provisional crown fabrication.
  • Applied four groups: control, desensitizing agent (DA), Nd: YAG laser irradiation (LI), and LI after DA.
  • Analyzed water elutes via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) at 10 minutes and 24 hours.

Main Results:

  • Monomer diffusion varied significantly based on desensitizing methods, resin systems, and time.
  • The lowest monomer diffusion was observed in dentin treated with Nd: YAG laser irradiation following DA application.
  • Both provisional resin systems showed measurable monomer diffusion, influenced by the applied treatments.

Conclusions:

  • Nd: YAG laser irradiation combined with DA application is highly effective.
  • This combination successfully eliminates monomer diffusion into the pulpal chamber.
  • The findings support a dual approach for enhanced protection during temporization.
