Summary

Debriefing in technology-enhanced simulation (TES) education shows mixed results, with video-assisted debriefing offering no significant advantage. Future research must fully report debriefing characteristics for clearer effectiveness insights.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Healthcare Simulation
  • Learning Sciences

Background:

  • Debriefing is integral to technology-enhanced simulation (TES) but its effectiveness is not well-established.
  • Incomplete reporting of debriefing characteristics hinders understanding of its impact.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize debriefing reporting in TES literature.
  • To identify features of debriefing associated with improved learning outcomes.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of debriefing when combined with TES.

Main Methods:

  • Systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Scopus for comparative studies on TES with debriefing.
  • Duplicate review of study quality and data abstraction on instructional design, debriefing, and outcomes.
  • Random-effects meta-analysis to pool effect sizes (ES).

Main Results:

  • 177 studies (11,511 learners) were included; debriefing characteristics were often poorly reported.
  • Video-assisted debriefing showed negligible, non-significant effects compared to non-video-assisted methods (ES = 0.10).
  • Simulation plus debriefing showed favorable pooled effect sizes for all outcomes (ES range = 0.28–2.16) compared to no intervention.

Conclusions:

  • Limited evidence indicates video-assisted debriefing is not superior to non-video-assisted methods.
  • Other debriefing design features yielded mixed or non-significant results.
  • Future research must comprehensively report all key debriefing characteristics and descriptors.
