The IL-23R gene
Area of Science:
- Genetics and Immunology
Background:
- Psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis are inflammatory conditions.
- The IL-23R gene plays a role in immune responses.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the association of the rs2201841 polymorphism in the IL-23R gene with psoriasis in a Serbian population.
- To determine if this genetic variant is linked to psoriatic arthritis.
Main Methods:
- Case-control study design.
- Genotyping of the rs2201841 polymorphism in the IL-23R gene.
- Comparison of allele frequencies between patients with psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis and healthy controls.
Main Results:
- The G allele of rs2201841 in the IL-23R gene was significantly more frequent in Serbian patients with psoriatic arthritis compared to controls (0.481 vs 0.308).
- Carrying the G allele was associated with a 3.311-fold increased risk of developing psoriatic arthritis (P = 0.009).
Conclusions:
- The rs2201841 polymorphism in the IL-23R gene is a risk factor for psoriatic arthritis in the Serbian population.
- This finding contributes to understanding the genetic basis of psoriatic arthritis.
