Assessment of the Mouth01:26

Assessment of the Mouth

1.6K
A thorough mouth assessment, including inspection and palpation of the lips, gums, tongue, tonsils, uvula, and pharynx, is crucial in detecting potential health issues. Diseases ranging from oral cancer to systemic conditions like diabetes could be identified early through careful oral examination. This article provides a detailed guide on conducting a comprehensive mouth assessment.
Mouth Inspection
The inspection begins with visually examining the mouth for symmetry, color, and size.

Tongue01:01

Tongue

4.2K
The human tongue is a fascinating and complex organ, responsible for various essential functions such as swallowing, speech, and taste. It is also subject to various conditions and diseases. In this article, we delve into the anatomy of the tongue, its roles, and some common conditions that can affect it.
Anatomical Position in the Oral Cavity
The tongue is located within the oral cavity, also known as the mouth. It is attached to the floor of the mouth by a fold of mucous membrane called the...

Taste Buds and Receptors

5.6K
Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

The Tongue and Taste Buds00:49

The Tongue and Taste Buds

34.7K
The surface of the tongue is covered with various small bumps called papillae, which either distribute what has been ingested (filiform papillae) or contain the sensory taste (or gustatory) receptor cells (fungiform, circumvallate, and foliate papillae). Embedded within each taste-related papilla are the taste buds—clusters of 30 to 100 gustatory receptor cells.

Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

16.7K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Summary

Partial glossectomy patients generally achieve good long-term subjective swallowing and articulation function. Factors like older age and larger resection volume were linked to poorer outcomes in this study.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Otolaryngology
  • Speech and Language Pathology

Background:

  • Swallowing and articulation disorders are common after glossectomy.
  • Long-term subjective functional outcomes following partial glossectomy lack extensive study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate long-term subjective swallowing and articulation function after partial glossectomy.
  • To identify factors influencing functional outcomes post-surgery.

Main Methods:

  • 63 patients with mobile tongue cancer undergoing partial glossectomy without reconstruction were assessed.
  • Subjective swallowing and articulation function were scored on a 100-point scale.
  • Multivariate analysis examined correlations between functional scores and perioperative data.

Main Results:

  • Mean long-term scores for swallowing and articulation function were high (87.7 ± 6.1 and 88.6 ± 5.4, respectively).
  • Swallowing function correlated with age, follow-up duration, T stage, and resection volume.
  • Articulation function correlated with follow-up duration.

Conclusions:

  • Partial glossectomy without reconstruction typically results in favorable long-term subjective function.
  • Poorer subjective outcomes are associated with larger resection volumes, older patient age, and shorter follow-up durations.
