Insights
Cardiac rehabilitation services in the UK are not meeting their goals. This review identifies key factors influencing patient attendance at cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Public Health
- Rehabilitation Medicine
Background:
- National audits reveal underachievement of National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease goals in UK cardiac rehabilitation.
- Consistent findings indicate a gap between established objectives and actual outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation services.
Purpose of the Study:
- To identify overarching themes influencing patient participation in cardiac rehabilitation.
- To explore factors affecting attendance rates in cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Main Methods:
- Systematic literature review of studies examining patient attendance in cardiac rehabilitation.
- Thematic analysis of identified factors influencing service uptake.
Main Results:
- Several key themes emerged influencing patient attendance.
- Factors such as patient motivation, perceived benefits, and accessibility impact engagement with cardiac rehabilitation.
Conclusions:
- Understanding these themes is crucial for improving cardiac rehabilitation service delivery.
- Addressing identified barriers can enhance patient attendance and program effectiveness.
Abstract:
Audits of cardiac rehabilitation in the U.K. have consistently found that the goals set out in the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease are not being met. This review aimed to identify themes that influence whether patients attend cardiac rehabilitation services. This article is the first in a two-part series. Part 2 reports the results of a research project looking at patients' views of cardiac rehabilitation on the island of Guernsey, and is published on page 20.

Exercise and Cardiovascular Response
Light to moderate physical activity initiates a series of interconnected responses in the body. The heart rate modestly increases in anticipation of the workout, followed by widespread vasodilation as oxygen consumption by skeletal muscles increases. This results in decreased peripheral resistance, increased capillary blood flow, and accelerated...
Barriers to Effective Communication II
Cultural barriers:
Differences in values, beliefs, religion, knowledge, and tradition can significantly impact communication. Awareness of nonverbal cues is critical, especially when conversing with a patient from a different culture. What appears appropriate in one culture may be inappropriate in another.
Semantic barriers:
As a result of their tendency to use...
