Parent-administered behavioral interventions significantly reduce attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in children. These effective parenting programs also improve conduct problems and boost parental self-esteem.
Area of Science:
- Child Psychology
- Behavioral Science
- Clinical Psychiatry
Background:
- Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder.
- Parent-administered behavioral interventions are increasingly utilized to manage ADHD symptoms.
- Evidence for the effectiveness of these interventions requires systematic evaluation.
Purpose of the Study:
- To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis of parent-administered behavioral interventions for ADHD.
- To evaluate the impact of these interventions on core ADHD symptoms, comorbid conduct problems, and parenting self-esteem.
Main Methods:
- Systematic review of randomized controlled trials and controlled trials.
- Inclusion of studies involving children with ADHD or high symptom levels (33-144 months).
- Meta-analysis using child symptom ratings as the primary outcome.
Main Results:
- Parenting interventions showed a significant reduction in ADHD symptoms (SMD = 0.68).
- Effectiveness was maintained even when medication was used concurrently.
- Significant improvements were observed in comorbid conduct problems (SMD = 0.59) and parenting self-esteem (SMD = 0.93).
Conclusions:
- Parenting interventions are effective for managing ADHD and related issues.
- Findings support current clinical practice guidelines for ADHD management.
- Increased availability of parenting interventions in community settings is recommended.
