Social Loafing01:37

Social Loafing

29.3K
Another way in which a group presence can affect performance is social loafing—the exertion of less effort by a person working together with a group. Social loafing occurs when our individual performance cannot be evaluated separately from the group. Thus, group performance declines on easy tasks (Karau & Williams, 1993). Essentially individual group members loaf and let other group members pick up the slack. Because each individual’s efforts cannot be evaluated,...

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

419
The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Social Facilitation01:04

Social Facilitation

29.0K
Not all intergroup interactions lead to negative outcomes. Sometimes, being in a group situation can improve performance. Social facilitation occurs when an individual performs better when an audience is watching than when the individual performs the behavior alone. This typically occurs when people are performing a task for which they are skilled.

Sources of Self-Esteem II: Performance Feedback

230
Self-esteem is intricately tied to our perception of competence and our ability to exert control over our lives. One of the primary sources of this perception is performance feedback — the ongoing evaluation of our actions in terms of success and failure. According to Franks and Marolla (1976), people derive self-worth from experiencing themselves as causal agents, capable of achieving goals and overcoming obstacles. This process nurtures a critical component of self-esteem:...

Self-Discrepancy Theory02:45

Self-Discrepancy Theory

17.9K
One influential perspective on what motivates people's behavior is detailed in Tory Higgin's self-discrepancy theory (Higgins, 1987). He proposed that people hold disagreeing internal representations of themselves that lead to different emotional states.

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive01:24

Personality Disorders: Dependent and Obsessive-Compulsive

764
Dependent personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder are two separate psychological conditions that influence behavior, relationships, and overall life functioning. Though both involve maladaptive behaviors, their core characteristics and motivations differ significantly.
 Dependent Personality Disorder
Dependent personality disorder is characterized by an excessive reliance on others to manage various aspects of life. Individuals with this disorder often struggle...

Summary

Team perfectionism, specifically team-oriented perfectionism, positively impacts rowing team performance. This study found that collective perfectionistic standards within a team can enhance competitive results and improvement over time.

Area of Science:

  • Sports Psychology
  • Team Dynamics
  • Performance Studies

Background:

  • Perfectionism is a known predictor of individual athletic performance.
  • Previous research has primarily focused on individual-level perfectionism in sports.
  • The impact of perfectionism at the team level in sports remains under-explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if team-level perfectionism predicts team performance in a competitive sports context.
  • To examine the relationship between collective perfectionism and team outcomes in rowing.

Main Methods:

  • A sample of 231 competitive rowers from 36 boats participated.
  • Measures of self-oriented, team-oriented, and team-prescribed perfectionism were administered.
  • Two-level latent growth curve modeling analyzed day-by-day boat performance data.

Main Results:

  • Evidence of collective team-oriented perfectionism was found within rowing boats.
  • Team-oriented perfectionism positively predicted mid-competition boat ranking.
  • Team-oriented perfectionism also positively predicted linear improvement in boat performance.

Conclusions:

  • Team-oriented perfectionism appears to be a significant factor in team sports performance.
  • Imposing perfectionistic standards on team members may enhance collective performance and improvement.
  • Future research should explore team perfectionism across various sports and performance metrics.
