Summary

Early intervention using hemifield eye patching and optokinetic stimulation did not improve outcomes for acute stroke patients with spatial neglect. The combined treatment showed no additive benefit compared to the natural recovery course.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of combined hemifield eye patching and optokinetic stimulation in acute stroke patients with spatial neglect.
  • To compare the treatment group against a control group receiving standard care.
  • To assess the impact on neuropsychological, functional, and clinical measures.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial was conducted with acute right hemisphere stroke patients diagnosed with spatial neglect.
  • The treatment group received 1 week of hemifield eye patching and daily optokinetic stimulation.
  • Outcome measures included neuropsychological tests, functional independence scales, and clinical impairment ratings, assessed at baseline, post-treatment, and 1-month follow-up.
