Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Pathology Residency Training
  • Team-based Learning (TBL)

Background:

  • Team-based learning (TBL) is established in undergraduate and medical education.
  • Its application in postgraduate medical education, particularly pathology residency, is less explored.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of TBL on learning and teamwork in pathology residency.
  • To assess TBL's effect on resident performance and professional competencies.

Main Methods:

  • Four TBL sessions were conducted.
  • Individual and group readiness assurance tests (IRAT/GRATs) were compared.
  • Team performance surveys assessed interaction quality.

Main Results:

  • Significant differences were observed between IRAT and GRAT scores (P < .05).
  • Team performance survey scores ranged from 5.3 ± 1.1 to 6.0 ± 0.0.
  • Residents demonstrated enhanced learning and teamwork.

Conclusions:

  • TBL effectively promotes learning and teamwork in pathology residency.
  • Higher readiness assurance test scores indicate successful team learning.
  • TBL enhances Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education competencies, including professionalism and communication skills.
