Area of Science:

  • Dental Implantology
  • Oral Surgery
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Functional endosseous dental implants are widely used.
  • Assessing bone remodeling around implants is crucial for long-term success.
  • Radiographic analysis offers a non-invasive method to evaluate bone changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate trabecular bone alterations around functional endosseous dental implants.
  • To utilize radiographic image analysis techniques for quantitative assessment.
  • To understand bone remodeling dynamics post-implant placement.

Main Methods:

  • Retrieved and digitized periapical radiographs of implant patients.
  • Applied image analysis techniques to quantify trabecular bone structure.
  • Analyzed data using SPSS, with statistical significance set at p<0.05.

Main Results:

  • 12 implants from 11 patients were analyzed.
  • Significant increase in bone area (mean distance between nodes, p=0.006).
  • Significant decrease in marrow area (bone area, p=0.006) and marrow space length (p=0.032).

Conclusions:

  • Bone around dental implants undergoes remodeling.
  • Implant placement results in a net increase in bone density.
  • Radiographic analysis confirms positive bone adaptation around implants.
