  • To systematically review the literature on advanced laparoscopic abdominal surgery simulation training.
  • To assess the educational impact and validity of simulation tools in this field.

  • Systematic literature search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library.
  • Keywords included simulation, education, laparoscopy, and various abdominal procedures.
  • Reference lists of included articles were also searched.

Main Results:

  • Fifty-four studies were retrieved, with low levels of evidence (mostly case series).
  • Eight randomized trials were identified; pig models and video trainers were common.
  • Studies indicated positive trainee satisfaction and some construct validity of tools, but improvements were often tool-specific.

Conclusions:

  • Current evidence on the educational value of advanced laparoscopic surgery simulation is limited.
  • Higher-quality studies are needed to rigorously evaluate simulation's effectiveness in surgical training.
