Summary

Self-etch (SE) adhesives resulted in less postoperative sensitivity at 24 hours compared to total-etch (TE) adhesives for composite restorations in Class-V cavities. This finding suggests SE adhesives may help reduce immediate post-operative discomfort.

  • Cavities were prepared and restored using either SE adhesive (adheSE one) or TE adhesive (Eco-Etch) followed by light-cured composite (Te-Econom).
  • Postoperative sensitivity was assessed using a visual analogue scale at baseline, immediately after restoration, 24 hours, and 1 week post-procedure, with cold stimulus and compressed air.
  • Main Results:

    • A statistically significant difference in sensitivity was observed between the SE and TE groups at the 24-hour follow-up using a cold stimulus.
    • No significant differences in sensitivity were found at baseline, immediately after restoration, or at the 1-week follow-up for either cold stimulus or compressed air.

    Conclusions:

    • Restorations placed with self-etch adhesives demonstrated less postoperative sensitivity at the 24-hour assessment compared to those placed with total-etch adhesives.
    • The findings suggest that self-etch adhesives may be beneficial in reducing postoperative sensitivity within the first 24 hours after composite restoration placement in Class-V cavities.
