In simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection, astrocytes exhibit altered morphology, with shorter, less branched processes. This astrocyte remodeling correlates with innate immune activation and may contribute to neuroinflammation in HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND).
