Anorexia Nervosa01:28

Anorexia Nervosa

2.0K
Anorexia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by an intense fear of weight gain, an unrelenting pursuit of thinness, and a distorted body image. It often leads to dangerously low body weight relative to an individual's age and height. This disorder is marked by significant physical and psychological consequences, making it one of the most life-threatening psychiatric illnesses.

Binge Eating Disorders01:23

Binge Eating Disorders

821
Binge eating disorder is a significant mental health condition characterized by recurrent episodes of excessive food consumption within a short period, accompanied by a perceived loss of control over eating behavior. Unlike occasional overeating, binge eating disorder is marked by distressing emotions such as guilt, shame, and anxiety following binge episodes. The disorder affects individuals across different ages and backgrounds, with profound implications for physical and psychological...

Bulimia Nervosa

1.1K
Bulimia nervosa is a complex and severe eating disorder characterized by a cyclical pattern of binge-and-purge eating pattern. It generally involves an episode of binge eating, followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, laxative use, or fasting, to prevent weight gain. Despite often maintaining a normal weight, individuals with bulimia are intensely preoccupied with their body image and harbor an overwhelming fear of gaining weight. This can contribute to the...

Taste Buds and Receptors

Gustation, or the sense of taste, is intrinsically linked to the anatomical structures located on the tongue. This organ's surface, along with the entirety of the oral cavity, is adorned with stratified squamous epithelium. Evident on the tongue are elevated structures known as papillae (singular = papilla), which house the mechanisms for the transduction of gustatory stimuli. Four distinct types of papillae exist, each identified by their unique morphological attributes: the circumvallate,...

Self-Schemas02:16

Self-Schemas

24.8K
In general, a schema is a mental construct consisting of a cluster or collection of related concepts (Bartlett, 1932). There are many different types of schemata, and they all have one thing in common: schemata are a method of organizing information that allows the brain to work more efficiently. When a schema is activated, the brain makes immediate assumptions about the person or object being observed.

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies02:09

Stereotype Threat and Self-fulfilling Prophecies

28.1K
When we hold a stereotype about a person, we have expectations that he or she will fulfill that stereotype. A self-fulfilling prophecy is an expectation held by a person that alters his or her behavior in a way that tends to make it true. When we hold stereotypes about a person, we tend to treat the person according to our expectations. This treatment can influence the person to act according to our stereotypic expectations, thus confirming our stereotypic beliefs. Research by Rosenthal and...

Summary

Stigma resistance is higher in individuals recovered from eating disorders compared to those currently diagnosed. Cultivating stigma resistance may aid recovery and mitigate negative impacts of mental illness stigma.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Stigma Research

Background:

  • Stigma resistance, the ability to counteract mental illness stigma, is vital but understudied in eating disorders.
  • Understanding stigma resistance in anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and EDNOS is crucial for effective interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate stigma resistance in individuals with current and recovered eating disorders.
  • To identify correlates of stigma resistance in this population.

Main Methods:

  • An online survey assessed stigma resistance using the Internalized Stigma of Mental Illness Scale.
  • Participants (n=452) completed measures of psychosocial and psychiatric health.

Main Results:

  • Recovered individuals (5.5%) showed significantly higher stigma resistance than currently diagnosed individuals (26.5%).
  • Higher stigma resistance correlated with fewer eating disorder/depression symptoms, higher self-esteem, and positive treatment attitudes.

Conclusions:

  • Stigma resistance is a promising concept for individuals with eating disorders.
  • Interventions should focus on cultivating stigma resistance to complement existing anti-stigma efforts.
  • Clinicians can use stigma resistance concepts to help patients manage stigmatization's adverse effects.
