Area of Science:

  • Medical Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Listeriosis typically affects vulnerable populations (elderly, pregnant, immunocompromised) presenting as meningoencephalitis or septicemia.
  • Localized Listeria monocytogenes infections are uncommon.
  • The role of Listeria monocytogenes in cholecystitis has not been previously established.

Observation:

  • Two cases of Listeria monocytogenes cholecystitis were identified from 467 L. monocytogenes infections.
  • These infections occurred in individuals not typically presenting with severe listeriosis.

Findings:

  • The study provides evidence for Listeria monocytogenes as a causative agent in cholecystitis.
  • These cases represent a rare, localized form of listeriosis.

Implications:

  • The findings support the gastrointestinal tract's significance in Listeria pathogenesis.
  • This expands the spectrum of clinical presentations for Listeria monocytogenes infections.
  • Highlights the need to consider L. monocytogenes in gallbladder infections, even in atypical presentations.
