Optical microscopy uses optic principles to provide detailed images of samples. Antonie van Leeuwenhoek designed the first compound optical microscope in the 17th century to visualize blood cells, bacteria, and yeast cells. In 1830, Joseph Jackson Lister created an essentially modern light microscope. The 20th century saw the development of microscopes with enhanced magnification and resolution.

    Background:

    • Multi-mode fibers (MMFs) are crucial for endoscopic imaging, but suffer from limited resolution and noise amplification.
    • Optimization-based reconstruction (OBR) is a technique used to process MMF imaging data.
    • Existing OBR methods can be further improved for better image quality.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To improve resolution and reduce noise in endoscopic imaging using multi-mode fiber.
    • To enhance the performance of optimization-based reconstruction (OBR) algorithms.
    • To achieve clearer and more accurate images for medical diagnosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Replacing random sampling patterns with those having more equal singular values.
    • Utilizing a point-spread function based on the estimated spatial frequency spectrum of the object in OBR.
    • Assigning less weight to modes with smaller singular values within the OBR algorithm.

    • Simulations with a step-index fiber (522 spatial modes) showed a 20% reduction in image error (l(2) norm) in noiseless conditions.
    • A further 33% reduction in image error was achieved under a 22-dB shot noise-limited signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
    • The modified OBR method significantly outperformed the original method using random sampling patterns.

    Conclusions:

    • The three proposed modifications substantially improve resolution and reduce noise in MMF endoscopic imaging.
    • The enhanced OBR algorithm provides superior image reconstruction accuracy compared to previous methods.
    • These advancements hold promise for improved diagnostic capabilities in endoscopic procedures.
