Background:

The 21st-century nursing workforce is inadequately prepared for the mental health needs of the aging population.
Nursing schools face significant challenges in integrating essential geropsychiatric nursing content into their educational programs.

Purpose of the Study:

To address the deficit in geropsychiatric nursing education within nursing schools.
To identify and propose solutions for integrating geropsychiatric nursing content into curricula.

Main Methods:

The Geropsychiatric Nursing Collaborative (GPNC), funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and the American Academy of Nursing, involved four nursing schools in a consultation project.
The project focused on identifying core geropsychiatric nursing competencies and content for curriculum mapping.
Examples of faculty resources for teaching key topics like depression, dementia, and delirium were developed.

Main Results:

Two primary challenges encountered by nursing schools in curriculum infusion were identified.
Strategies and solutions were developed to overcome these challenges.
Core competencies and content were defined to aid in curriculum development and integration.

Conclusions:

Integrating geropsychiatric nursing content into nursing curricula is crucial.
This integration is essential for preparing future nurses to effectively manage the mental health needs of older adults.
