Summary

Reducing caffeine intake may alleviate overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms like urgency and frequency in women. This pilot study suggests decaffeinated fluids can improve OAB symptom severity and quality of life.

  • To investigate the impact of caffeinated versus decaffeinated fluids on OAB symptoms in women.

  • A double-blind, randomized, crossover study involving 14 women with OAB.
  • Participants alternated between 14-day periods of caffeinated and decaffeinated fluid intake, with washout periods.
  • Outcomes included bladder diary data (urgency, frequency, volume, incontinence), ICIQ-OAB, ICIQ-OABqol scores, and visual analogue scales for caffeine withdrawal.

Main Results:

  • A significant reduction in urinary urgency and frequency was observed during the decaffeinated period.
  • Total International Consultation on Incontinence-Overactive Bladder Module (ICIQ-OAB) scores significantly decreased with decaffeinated fluid intake.
  • No significant differences were found for caffeine withdrawal measures.

Conclusions:

  • Reducing caffeine intake may help alleviate OAB symptom severity and improve health-related quality of life.
  • Caffeine substitutes were well-tolerated by participants in this pilot study.
  • The study methodology is suitable for a future randomized control trial.
