Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

1.2K
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Endoscopic Procedures III: Video Capsule Endoscopy

1.5K
Capsule endoscopy, or wireless or video capsule endoscopy, is a diagnostic procedure for examining the entire gastrointestinal tract. Patients swallow a capsule about the size of a vitamin tablet. The capsule is equipped with a transmitter, a battery, an LED light source, and a color video camera to capture images throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This procedure is particularly useful for diagnosing conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, tumors, polyps, ulcers,...

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Cardiology
  • Medical Devices

Background:

  • Endoscopic polypectomy is standard for gastrointestinal polyps but considered contraindicated in patients with cardiac devices.
  • Limited research exists on the safety of endoscopic polypectomy for individuals with pacemakers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety of endoscopic polypectomy using high-frequency current in patients with implanted cardiac devices.
  • To assess potential risks and functional disruptions to cardiac devices during the procedure.

Main Methods:

  • 14 patients with gastrointestinal polyps and cardiac devices underwent endoscopic polypectomy.
  • Continuous monitoring of vital signs and electrocardiography was performed.
  • A cardiologist was present, and cardiac devices were reinterrogated post-procedure.

Main Results:

  • All 61 procedures in 14 patients were completed successfully without abnormalities.
  • No statistically significant differences were observed in pre-, intra-, or post-operation data.
  • No patient experienced arrhythmias or functional disruption of their cardiac devices.

Conclusions:

  • Endoscopic polypectomy with high-frequency current appears safe for pacemaker patients.
  • Larger multicenter studies are recommended to confirm safety in this population.
