Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Drug Analysis Methods01:26

Therapeutic Drug Monitoring: Drug Analysis Methods

342
Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) is a clinical practice that measures specific drug levels in a patient's blood or body tissues to tailor drug therapy effectively. This monitoring is critical for managing drugs with narrow therapeutic indices like digoxin and phenytoin, ensuring they are both safe and effective. For instance, monitoring theophylline levels in asthma patients involves precision and sensitivity to adjust doses according to individual responses to therapy, ensuring efficacy and...

Summary

Residual methadone in empty bottles poses an accidental overdose risk, particularly for children. Harm reduction strategies are crucial for methadone maintenance treatment safety.

Area of Science:

  • Pharmacology
  • Public Health
  • Toxicology

Background:

  • Methadone maintenance treatment is a key intervention for opiate dependence.
  • Unused methadone poses a lethal intoxication risk, especially in children.
  • Significant quantities of methadone bottles are discarded daily, creating potential household hazards.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the residual methadone quantity in used bottles.
  • To determine the risk of accidental intoxication from these residual amounts, particularly for vulnerable populations like children.

Main Methods:

  • Analyzed residual methadone dosage in 175 recapped bottles from patients in a treatment program.
  • Data collected over a 2-week period in March 2013.

Main Results:

  • Mean residual methadone was 1.9 ± 1.8 mg per bottle.
  • For 60 mg bottles, mean residual methadone was 3.3 ± 2.4 mg.

Conclusions:

  • Empty methadone bottles present a significant accidental overdose risk, especially for children.
  • Harm reduction strategies include supervised administration, bottle return programs, and patient education.
  • Consideration of methadone capsules for stable patients with take-home doses is recommended.
