Intervertebral disc herniation refers to the displacement of the nucleus pulposus (the gel-like inner core of the disc) through a tear or weakened area in the annulus fibrosus (the outer fibrous ring). A new framework uses simplex active surface models to accurately segment healthy and herniated intervertebral discs from MRI scans. This method aids in spine pathology identification and surgical planning by creating detailed 3D anatomical models.
