Stimulants01:29

Stimulants

1.4K
Stimulants are substances that enhance neural activity and elevate dopamine levels in the brain, leading to their highly addictive nature. These drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, MDMA, caffeine, and nicotine, each with distinct mechanisms of action and varied health implications.
Cocaine can be administered via snorting, injection, or smoking. It primarily functions by blocking the reuptake of dopamine, resulting in a euphoric high characterized by an intense sensation of happiness and...

Convenience Sampling Method00:55

Convenience Sampling Method

8.5K
Sampling is a technique to select a portion (or subset) of the larger population and study that portion (the sample) to gain information about the population. Data are the result of sampling from a population. The sampling method ensures that samples are drawn without bias and accurately represent the population.
Convenience sampling is a non-random method of sample selection; this method selects individuals that are easily accessible and may result in biased data. For example, a marketing...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

11.5K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Group Design02:01

Group Design

9.3K
The most basic experimental design involves two groups: the experimental group and the control group. The two groups are designed to be the same except for one difference— experimental manipulation. The experimental group gets the experimental manipulation—that is, the treatment or variable being tested—and the control group does not. Since experimental manipulation is the only difference between the experimental and control groups, we can be sure that any differences between...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.3K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Adolescent Health
  • Substance Use Research

Background:

  • Hookah use prevalence is increasing among adolescents.
  • Understanding demographic and socioeconomic factors is crucial for targeted interventions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify demographic and socioeconomic correlates of hookah use among US high school seniors.
  • To test the hypothesis that impoverished adolescents and cigarette smokers are more likely to use hookahs.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from 5540 high school seniors in the nationally representative Monitoring the Future survey (2010-2012).
  • Multivariable binary logistic regression was used to determine correlates of hookah use in the past 12 months.

Main Results:

  • 18% of students reported past-year hookah use.
  • Higher socioeconomic status (parental education, student income) was associated with increased odds of hookah use.
  • Current and former cigarette smokers, males, urban students, and users of alcohol, marijuana, and illicit substances showed higher odds of hookah use.

Conclusions:

  • Adolescents from higher socioeconomic backgrounds are at significant risk for hookah use.
  • Prevention strategies should prioritize higher socioeconomic status adolescents due to increasing prevalence.
