Summary

The STOP-Bang questionnaire, a tool for screening obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), can predict difficult intubation. A score of 3 or higher indicates a higher risk of intubation challenges in surgical patients.

Purpose of the Study:

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study of 200 adult surgical patients.
  • Preoperative assessment included STOP-Bang questionnaire, Mallampati score, and tonsil size.
  • Difficult intubation defined as Cormack & Lehane grade III/IV, need for aids, or ≥3 attempts.

  • A STOP-Bang score of ≥3 identified a high risk for OSA (83/200 patients).
  • Difficult intubation occurred more frequently in high-risk OSA patients (13.3% vs. 2.6%, p=0.004).

Conclusions:

  • The STOP-Bang score of ≥3 is a significant predictor of difficult intubation.
  • Factors like weight, neck circumference, Mallampati score, and male gender also correlate with difficult intubation.
