Summary

Information processing speed (IPS) declines fastest in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients, emerging as the earliest cognitive deficit. This impacts daily activities, with significant decline noted around age 56 on the SDMT.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the time course of cognitive domain decline in MS.
  • To identify the earliest affected cognitive domains in MS.

Main Methods:

  • Neuropsychological data from 514 MS patients were analyzed.
  • Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox-proportional hazard models were used.
  • Factors influencing cognitive decline time course were examined.

Main Results:

  • Information processing speed (IPS) tests showed significantly faster decline than other cognitive tests.
  • Median age for pathological decline was 56.2 years for SDMT and 63.9 years for a memory task (CLTR).

Conclusions:

  • IPS is the most affected cognitive domain in MS.
  • IPS deficits are the first to emerge in the course of MS.
