Transfusion-associated microchimerism (TA-MC) was studied in women after delivery. Enduring TA-MC was not detected, suggesting it is not a long-term consequence in this patient population.

Background:

  • Microchimerism (MC) involves the coexistence of allogeneic cells within a host.
  • MC is known in pregnancy and blood transfusion contexts.
  • Transfusion-associated MC (TA-MC) has been primarily observed in trauma patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence of enduring, high-level TA-MC in women transfused peripartum.
  • To determine if peripartum transfusions lead to persistent TA-MC.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective cohort study design.
  • Inclusion of 22 women transfused within 48 hours of delivery.
  • Monitoring for TA-MC at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum.

Main Results:

  • Two subjects exhibited transient TA-MC.
  • No persistent TA-MC was detected at 6 weeks and 6 months postpartum.
  • The majority of participants did not develop detectable TA-MC.
